Johan is the son of Mads Andersen Jacobsen and Elsie Marie Larsdatter, both of Denmark. The Jacobson immigrated from Denmark to America. Upon their arrival, they took a train to Nebraska and joined the John G. Holman Company. With other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the company left Nebraska on September 1, 1868 bound for the Great Salt Lake Valley.

Company records documented that approximately 30 people died as they journeyed west. Among those lost is 3-year-old Johan. He is buried alongside the Mormon Trail West.
