Johan Adolf Rose is the son of Olof Anderson Rose and Maja Lena Olausdotter Brink, both of Sweden. The Rose family sailed to America on the ship “John Bright.” After their arrival, they traveled to Wyoming, Nebraska by train and joined an “Unknown Company” destined for the Utah Territory.
Along the way, 4-year-old Johan grew ill and died on August 18, 1868, and was buried in Wyoming along the Mormon Trail. His younger brother, Charles, died just two weeks prior.
A history of his parents records: “All went well with them until within a few days of their destination when the two younger boys became ill and died. Crude boxes were nailed together and their little bodies, with the usual brief ceremonies were laid to rest by the road side. Their graves are somewhere between Laramie and Cheyenne. Carl Oscar died 5 Aug 1868 and John Adolf died 18 August 1868. With rather heavy hearts the three continued on the last lap of a long tiresome journey.”
