Jens Severin Jenson is the son of Jens Jensen Skraeder and Karen Jensdatter both of Denmark. Jens's parents did not immigrate with Jens to America. He is believed to have come with other family members, as there are many named Jensen or Jenson listed on the Company roster. Jens joined the William Henry Chipman Company with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On July 11, 1866, the company left Nebraska for the Great Salt Lake Valley.

Exhaustive travel, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. After a month of traveling, 6-year-old Jens passed away and was buried along the Mormon Trail west.
