Janet Crawford is the sixth of nine children born to John Crawford and Helen Riley, both from Scotland.

The Crawford family immigrated to America by sailing on the ship “Hudson.” After arriving in America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the Warren S. Snow Company to journey with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The company left on August 17, 1864 with John, Helen, Janet, and two other children

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature birth, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Somewhere along the journey, 1-year-old Janet passed away of unknown causes. She is buried on the plains on the Mormon Trail west.
