Jane Mary DeFresne was the eighth child born to Jacques-Philippe aka James Phillip Du Fresne from France and Marie Mary Remon from the Channel Islands. Some of the family immigrated to America to join other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to journey west to the great Salt Lake Valley.

Disease, injury, limited food, and weather were among the great threats to pioneers. Not long after departing for their journey, many in the company were infected with Cholera (caused by contaminated water). While the cause is unknown, 9-year-old Jane Mary became ill and passed away and was buried on the Mormon Trail, somewhere in Nebraska.
