James William Price III is the son of James Price Jr. and Ann Powell, both of England. The Price family immigrated from England to America on the ship “General McClellan.” After arriving in America, the family traveled to Nebraska to join the Joseph S. Rawlins Company bound for the Great Salt Lake Valley. With other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the company left on July 15, 1864.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. While on the trail for about 10 days, 1-year-old James suffered from dysentery and passed away. They wrapped him in a blanket and buried him in a shallow grave by Ash Hollow. They covered his gave with rocks to keep it from being disturbed by wild animals.
