James’ parents were James Raymond Horrax and Catherine Daft both from England. James was the third child born to them.

After the Horrax's traveled across the ocean from England and arrival in America, they joined the Ira Eldredge Company to travel to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. The company left Iowa on July 1.

On September 6, little James passed away when they were near Fort Bridger, Wyoming. There is no information found for why he passed away.

In one of the journals of the journey, the writer explains what the day was like when James passed away:

“Sept 6 Travelled 4¾{.} Crossed again{.} Crossed Black’s Fork; also Crossed Smith’s Fork and nooned. Afternoon 4¼ and Camped about 1 mile west of the Fort at Bridger. Plenty of Feed, Water

One year old James is buried along the Mormon Trail West of Fort Bridger, Wyoming.
