James Carlin is the eighth of nine children born to John Carlin and Ann McLachlan, both from Scotland.
After the family immigrated to America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the William S. Warren Company to journey to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Along with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the company left Nebraska on July 22, 1864.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature birth, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. While traveling through Wyoming, 9-month-old James passed away of unknown causes. He is buried along the Mormon Trail in Wyoming by the Platte River.
According to a journal by Orley Bliss: “S10 traveled 4 miles and nooned on the head of the platte I went a hunting did not see any game saw a man while a hunting but did not make his acquaintance afternoon traveled 8¼ miles made a dry camp a child of bro and Sister Carlin died this after noon 5 oxen dead this morning”
