Iowa's parents are Niels Sørensen and Kirsten Pedersdatter, both from Denmark.
After the Sorensen's traveled from Denmark to America, they joined the Christian Christiansen Company to cross the plains to the Salt Lake Valley, the Company left June 9.
On the 22nd of June, Kirsten gave birth to a daughter, and since the little girl was born in Iowa, they named her Iowa. Iowa was the 6th of seven children born into the family.
Unfortunately one week later, little Iowa passed away, she is buried along the Mormon Trail in Iowa.
An older daughter wrote this from her journal:
“In the state of Iowa, Anne Marie's mother gave birth to another baby girl, she only lived a short time. There she was buried. With their grief was mingled the thought that perhaps before morning the wild beasts would dig up and devour the body of their baby. The mother's suffering was extreme.
