Hyrum Briggs was the youngest of nine children born to Robert Briggs from England and Jemima MaCauley from Belfast, Ireland.
The Briggs family immigrated to America, sailing on the ship “Monarch of the Sea.” After arriving in America, they traveled to Nebraska where they joined the John Riggs Murdock Company. Along with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Company began their journey to the Salt Lake Valley on June 29, 1864.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature births, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. When they were in Wyoming, Saints were suffering from Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, cholera, dysentery, and other illnesses. Hyrum's mother passed away in July on the Mormon Trail.
With the loss of his mother, there was no nourishment for 3-month-old Hyrum and passed away one month later. He is buried along the Mormon Trail in Wyoming.
