Hulda Mariana Erickson is the fourth of five children born to Anders Jonas Erickson and Anna Greta Anderson, both of Sweden. The family immigrated to America from Sweden, sailing on the ship B.S. Kimball. When they arrived in America in June of 1863, they continued their travel overland to Florence, Nebraska and joined an unknown company to journey to the Salt Lake Valley with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. The pioneers had not traveled far when 1-year-old passed away of undocumented causes. She is buried somewhere on the Mormon Trail in Nebraska.

An older sister recorded that “she died and was buried without a coffin by the side of the road.”
