Henry Tavener Papworth is the son of James Papworth and Elizabeth Tavener, both born in England.
In 1864, the family immigrated to America with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sailing on the ship “Hudson.”
While crossing the Atlantic Ocean, measles spread among the Saints. The Papworth’s 2-year-old daughter fell victim of the disease and passed away. They, among other Saints who lost loved ones, saw their lost family members buried at sea.
After arriving in America, the family traveled to Wyoming, Nebraska and joined the William Hyde Company bound for the great Salt Lake Valley. At the time of their journey, Elizabeth and James were expecting a baby, making travel especially challenging.
However, Elizabeth’s pregnancy did not preclude her from helping other Saints deliver babies or who were sick. James helped with finding meat for members of the camp.
While near the summit of Parley's Canyon, Elizabeth delivered a son. The next day the baby, name Henry Tavener Papworth, died and is buried at Parley's Canyon.
The family traveled on to the Salt Lake Valley.
