Heber Hill was born to Henry Hill and Mary Bishop Griffiths. After the Hill's joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mary had a desire to emigrate to America and journey with other Saints to the Salt Lake Valley. However, Henry did not have the same desire. Mary left and took their two children, Heber and Caroline, and sailed to America.

After the little family arrived in America, they went on to Nebraska and joined the Ira Eldredge Company. They left July 1, 1861 for the Salt Lake Valley.

The company traveled a little more than a week when 2-year-old Heber succumbed with diphtheria. He was buried in Florence, Nebraska on a hill close to the Mormon Trail. The company records state that Heber died from “diphtheria” about 16 miles east of Fremont, Nebraska.

A year later, Heber’s father followed the family to Utah..
