Hans Hansen is the son of Henrick 'Henry' Hansen and Ane Nielsdatter, both of Denmark. The Hansen family sailed the Atlantic Ocean to America on the ship “Emerald Isle.” Many on the ship suffered from illness due to contaminated water.

After arriving in America, they journeyed with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latte-day Saints to Nebraska. There, they joined the John G. Holman Company and left for the Great Salt Lake Valley on September 1, 1868.

Many members of the company became ill, effects they suffered while on the ship. Hans, 6-years-old, became increasingly ill as they traveled through Wyoming. He passed away and was buried on the wayside of the Mormon Trail.
