Hannah Louisa Richins was the first child born to Charles Wager Richins and Louisa Shill, both from England. After joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Charles sailed to America and joined the Joseph W. Young Company to trek west to the Salt Lake Valley. One year later he sent for Louisa and Hannah to come to America where they joined an unknown company and began their journey west.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Among those taken along the way was 2-year-old Hannah Louisa. She is buried along the Mormon Trail near Fort Kearney, Nebraska.
