Hannah's Story

Hannah Lock is the fifth of seven children born to Robert Lock and Charlotte Todman, both of England.
The Lock family and five children immigrated from England to America, sailing on the ship “Amazon.” After arriving in New York, the family traveled to Nebraska and joined the Daniel D. McArthur Company to go West to the Salt Lake Valley. With other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Company departed Nebraska on August 6.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. The travel was particularly harsh on children. While traveling through Nebraska, 3-year-old Hannah from undocumented causes. She is buried east of Rattle Snake Creek, Nebraska.
From the diary of Elijah Larkin: “15th Started at 7. A.M. I went fishing with Wm. & Chas & we caught a large quantity of various Kinds. I also told my family to walk all they could as we were loaded verry heavy. The Islands in the River bed which was almost dry looked splendid. Bro. Robt. Locks Daughter Hannah Toplin aged 3 Yrs died in the Waggon between 10 & 11 A.M. & was burried this evening in Hall County, Nebrasker”
