Gotftried Nyffenegger is the son of Gottlieb Nyffenegger and Anna Elisabetha Loosli, both of Switzerland. After immigrating to America, 4-year-old Gottfried, his siblings and parents joined the William Hyde Company of 1864 to journey with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Great Salt Lake Valley.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. As the company was west of the Platte River, Gottfried passed away of Thursday, September 1, 1864 of unknown causes. He is buried on the Mormon Trail.
