George Orme is the sixth of thirteen children born to Joseph Orme and Emily Green, both from England.

The Orme family immigrated from England to America sailing on the ship “Amazon.” Upon arriving in America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the John W. Woolley Company. With other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Company left for the Utah Territory on August 9, 1863.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature birth, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. After being on the Mormon trail for nearly a month, 9-year-old George passed away.

A Company journal states: “…two children died in our train during the day. Rather cold, camped three miles above Sweetwater. Camped night before at Split Rock.”

(This could have referenced the death of George and another child.)
