George Harrison Goddard is the son of George Goddard and Elizabeth Harrison, both from England. After immigrating to America, the Goddard family joined the John Tidwell Company to journey to the Great Salt Lake Valley with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. About a month crossing the plains, cholera (a bacterial disease caused from contaminated water) invaded the camp, infecting many members of the company.

From Elizabeth Harrison’s history: “George was attacked and then our little Henry did not live many hours. George seemed to improve and would be dressed to go and see some children baptized, but I think he took cold, had a relapse and we had to part with him.”

George Goddard, 11 years old, is buried near North Platte in Nebraska.
