George B. McClellan Hutchison is the youngest of nine children born to William Hutchison and Jane Penman both from Scotland. The family immigrated to America, sailing on the ship “SS George B. McClellan.” Just 17 days after the family began their trip, Jane gave birth to a son. They named him after the ship they were on: George B. McClellan Hutchison.
After arriving in America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the William S. Warren Company to journey to the Salt Lake Valley with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latte-day Saints. The Company left July 22, 1864.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. When the Company was on the east side of the Sweetwater, Wyoming, Jane (George’s mother) passed away and is buried where they camped for the night. Two days later, baby George died. B. passed away and is buried along the Momon Trail.
According to William’s history, George took cold and died while camped on the North Fork of the Sweetwater.
From the journal of Orley D Bliss: “A18 traveled 15 miles and camped on the north fork of sweet water I went a hunting saw some men digging for gold bro Allen died a child of sister Hutchinsons [George Hutchison] and a child of bro Chapels [Angelina Chappell] died the three was buried this evening in one grave”
