Esther Mary Mouldin was born to William Henry Moulding and Eliza Wickens, both of England. They emigrated from England to America, arriving in Pennsylvania. There, 8-month-old Esther suffered from infantile cholera, passed away, and was buried on July 28 in the Philanthropic Cemetery, Philadelphia. (A copy of the City's Registration of Deaths and a Return of Death, Physician's Certificate issued by the City of Philadelphia on file in Esther's family search sources.)

In 1861, the family traveled west and with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joined an “unknown company” to journey to the Salt Lake Valley.
