Ephraim Hartle is one of four sons born to William Hartle and Elizabeth Williams, both from England. The Hartle Family immigrated from England to America and joined the Martin Handcart Company.

After about a month on the Mormon Trail, Elizabeth fell to “fever and ague” (a shivering fit) and passed away. A few of the children experienced the same symptoms. Elizabeth was buried by the Mormon Trail and according to a journal written by a son, “she was buried without a coffin.” About two weeks later, 1-year-old Ephraim died and buried by the Mormon Trail.
