After traveling from England to America, they joined the Ira Eldredge Company to journey west to the Salt Lake Valley. The company left Nebraska on July 1, 1861. When they were east of Fremont, Nebraska, 6-month-old Emma suffered from a fever and passed away. She is buried on the Mormon Trail just east of Fremont, Nebraska.

The company's journal reads: “Emily Hill; age 6 months; Country: England; Date and Place of Death: 12 July 1861, 13 miles East of Freemont; {Fremont, Nebraska} Nature of Disease: Fever; Maiden Name of Mother: Emily Hill; Remarks: Not married.”
