Emma Dunn was the daughter of John Dunn and Elizabeth Allen from England. The family immigrated to America with a desire to be with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They joined the Abraham O. Smoot Company to journey west.
Disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Emma, 12-years-old, and her sister Sarah became ill. While it is unknown what caused their illness, cholera, caused from contaminated water or food, was a constant threat.
While listed on the roster of those traveling with the company, records indicate that Emma and Sarah died before the company left Iowa on 14 May 1852.
