Ellen Barnes is the daughter of William Perryman and Frances Mary Broadbent from England. William passed away in 1851. Frances then married Charles Barnes, Jr. While on the ship sailing the Atlantic Ocean from England to America, Frances gave birth to a son. Both Frances and her son passed away and buried at sea.

After arriving in America, Charles Barnes took Ellen and joined the Cyrus H. Wheelock Company to journey west with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Within miles from entering the Salt Lake Valley, 7-year-old Ellen died and buried in Wyoming by Big Mountain.

From the history of Charles Barnes: “My daughter, Ellen, was very sick about seven weeks. On arriving at the foot of Big Mountain, she died—October 1853. She was buried near the camp.”
