Elizabeth Giles is the daughter of Thomas Davis Giles from England and Margaret Thomas from Wales. The family, along with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, immigrated from England to America and joined the Edward Bunker Company in 1856. Margaret was expecting a child and gave birth to a girl, named Elizabeth on September 1.

Margaret never recovered from childbirth. Both Elizabeth and her mother passed away in Laramie, Wyoming and are buried at Fort Laramie.
