Eliza's parents are George Henry Sheppard and Mary Ann Ashman, both of Wales.
After joining the church, it was decided that Mary Ann and two daughters were to go to America, and George and boys would come later. Mary Ann, Eliza and Sarah came to America on the ship John J. Boyd.
After arriving here, they joined the Homer Duncan Company in Nebraska to go west and get a home set up for George and the boys.
In the company as they traveled, Mary Ann used her knowledge of being a midwife and an herbal doctor to help Saints in the company when they were sick or in need of help.
There was some sickness on the journey within the company, and little Eliza became sick.
There is no information available to say what she was ailing with, but Eliza passed away.
Even though Mary Ann helped others, she couldn't help her daughter get better.
According to Mary Ann's story, “ It was with a heavy heart that she saw Eliza, her infant daughter, buried in a shallow grave on the prarie. The baby took sick and died, being wrapped in cloth and buried under a bush.”
Little one year old Eliza is buried on the Mormon Trail somewhere in Wyoming.
