Elijah Orme is the eighth of thirteen children born to Joseph Orme and Emily Green, both from England.
The family immigrated from England to America, sailing on the ship “Amazon.” After arriving in America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the John W. Woolley Company. Along with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Company departed on August 9, 1863 for the Great Salt Lake Valley.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature birth, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers.
From his parents’ histories, it indicated that cholera (a bacterial disease caused from contaminated water) inflicted many of the Saints. After a month on the trek west, 3-year-old Elijah passed away. He is buried in Nebraska along the Mormon Trail.
