Edward Slade is the son of William Slade and Amelia Lacey, both from England. The Slade family immigrated from England to America. After arriving in America, they lived in Pennsylvania to work and save money to join other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Salt Lake Valley. Charles was born while the family lived in Pennsylvania.
Amelia and her children traveled to Nebraska to join the Warren S. Snow Company for their journey to Zion. The company left Florence, Nebraska on August 13, 1864.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Edward, 2-years-old, and his younger brother Charles, suffered from dysentery. Charles passed away, and two weeks later, Edward died. He was wrapped in half of his mother’s shawl (his brother had been wrapped in the other half) and buried in a shallow grave in Green River, Wyoming.
