Edward Downard is the fifth of seven children born to George Downard and Sarah Ann Downard, both from England. After the Downard's sailed to America, they traveled overland to Nebraska, where they joined the Horton D Haight Company to travel to the Salt Lake Valley in. The company of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints went westward bound on August 10, 1862.
While the company was still in Nebraska, 1-year-old Edward Hiram passed away and buried along the Mormon trail. The cause of death is unknown.
