David Loynd is the fifth of nine children born to Gihon Loynd and Hannah Banks, both of England.

In 1866, Gihon and Hannah and their six children immigrated to America, crossing the Atlantic on the ship “Arkwright.” Making the trip with their parents were their children Walter, Ellen, Alice, David, Mary and Jane, 10 months old.

After arriving in America, the family traveled West to Nebraska where they joined the Daniel Thompson Company. On July 24, 1866, the company composed of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints left for the great Salt Lake Valley.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature birth, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Cholera, a bacterial disease caused from contaminated water, infected many of the travelers. Among those who became ill and died was 7-year-old David. He is buried along the Mormon Trail.

The family went on to Utah. But according to records, the family eventually returned to England. The 1871 Census has the Loynd family in Bolton, Lancashire with another child, John age 2.
