Charlotte Pheobe Dunne is the daughter of Daniel Henry Dunne and Elizabeth Ketteringham, both of England. The Dunne family boarded the ship “Emerald Isle” to immigrate to America. After arriving, the family traveled by train to Nebraska where they joined the Edward T. Munford Company. Along with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the company left for the Salt Lake Valley on September 1, 1868.
Disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Two weeks after beginning their journey, 3-year-old Charlotte passed away from mountain fever (a tick borne illness) and buried near Little Sandy River in Wyoming. Her mother passed away four days later after giving birth to twins, who also died.
From the journal of Francis A. Brown: “Saturday 12th Passed a severe cold night. Ice froze 1 inch thick. the wind fell and the day was delightful. We made Little Sandy & camped on it for the night Bro Duns little girl died and we buried her before retiring to rest. Her disease was mountain fever.”
