Charles Slade is the son of William Slade and Amelia Lacey, both from England.
The Slade family immigrated from England to America. After arriving in America, they lived in Pennsylvania to work and save money to join other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Salt Lake Valley. Charles was born while the family lived in Pennsylvania.
Amelia and her children traveled to Nebraska to join the Warren S. Snow Company for their journey to Zion. The company left Florence, Nebraska on August 13, 1864.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Six-month-old Charles became ill with dysentery and passed away. The baby was wrapped in a portion of his mother’s shawl and buried in a shallow grave in eastern Wyoming.
