Charles Daniel Pierson is the second of twelve children born to Harmon Dudley Pierson of Connecticut and Louisa Whitaker of North Carolina, who met and married in 1848 in Iowa.
As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the family joined the William Snow – Joseph Young Company to journey west to the Salt Lake Valley. Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature birth, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. When the company was 16 miles west of the Missouri River, 10-month-old Charles passed away of undocumented causes. He is buried along the Mormon Trail in Iowa.
