Caroline Haderlie is the daughter of Johann Ulrich Häderli and Anna Elizabeth Zollinger. The Haderlie's boarded the ship “Carolina” to immigrate to America. While on the ship, Anna gave birth to a daughter whom they named after the ship “Caroline.” After arriving in America, they traveled to Nebraska in a cattle car that tipped over. Anna fell on top of her baby girl in an attempt to protect her. The baby seemed to be doing well as the journey continued.
When the family arrived in Nebraska, they joined the Thomas E. Ricks Company bound for the Salt Lake Valley. Along with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the company left July 10, 1866. Disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Along the trail in Wyoming, 3-month-old Caroline passed away and is buried along the Mormon Trail near Sweetwater, Wyoming.
From the journal of Jacob Zollinger (Anna’s brother): “We didn't have a box to put her in so we wrapped her in a blanket and buried her beside the road.”
