Bernhardt Gulbrandsen is the son of Hans Gulbrandsen and Elen Paulsdatter, both from Norway. After immigrating to America from Norway, the Gulbrandsen Family joined the Peter Nebeker Company of 1863 to journey to the Great Salt Lake Valley with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. According to a quote in a family history, 6-year-old Bernhardt passed away “either before or after Fort Laramie.” (It is unknown as to the cause of death.) Bernhardt is buried along the Mormon Trail in Wyoming.
