Baby Normington is the child of Thomas Normington and Maria Jackson, both born in England. They were blessed to have ten children. Thomas, Maria and their children immigrated from England on the ship Horizon and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts. They traveled west to join the Edward Martin Company of 1856 to cross the plains with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bound for the Salt Lake Valley.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. While crossing the plains in Nebraska Maria gave birth to a baby (unknown gender). The baby “lived only a couple hours,” as mentioned in a family history. It is assumed that the baby is buried in Nebraska, somewhere along the trail.
