Annie's Story

Annie's parents are Henry Smith and Matilda Watts, both born in England. In Family Search records, both families were living in America, they met and were married in New Jersey.
Their third child was a daughter Annie Riley Smith.
In 1862 they traveled to Nebraska to join the Ansil R. Harmon Company to go with the other Saints to the Salt Lake Valley. The company left on August 1.
At the beginning of the journey west, their 9 month old Annie came down with diarrhea and passed away from it. Little Annie was laid to rest in Nebraska on the Mormon Trail.
In the journal of J.D.T. McAllister he said, in part:
"Monday 4th [August 1862] at daybreak I was informed that Annie Riley Smith Daughter of Henry & Matilda Age 9 mos died of Diahorea. we buried her on a rise of land along the trail.”
