Annie's Story
Birth: December 4th, 1859 | female | in New York
Death: September 3rd, 1861 | 1 year old | near Sweetwater, Wyoming
Memorial: Stone 10 | left column
Annie Hughes was the daughter of Peter Hughes of Wales and Elizabeth Evans of England. After they joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints they sailed to America with two daughters. Their ship landed in New York where they remained for a few years. While there, Elizabeth delivered a third daughter, Annie Lloyd Hughes.
In 1861, the family joined the Joseph Horne Company to trek west with other Saints. On the journey, the little girls rode in the back of the wagon with their father, who had been ill and unable to walk. Elizabeth had to pull the wagon with their belongings and her family in the back. In her journal, she wrote that on long days of traveling, sometimes she was so tired that she slept while she walked.
Because the journey was long and hard on everyone, their little 15-month-old Annie passed away. She is buried along the Mormon Trail near Sweetwater, Wyoming. Three days after they arrived in Salt Lake City, Peter died and is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
