Anne Ballmarie Johansen is a daughter of Peder Christian Johansen and Sidsel Marie Jensen, both of Denmark. The Johansen's immigrated to America on the ship “Manhattan.” After they arrived, they traveled by train to an outfitting camp in Nebraska. There they joined the Leonard G. Rice Company that departed with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 11, 1867 for the Salt Lake Valley.
There are two conflicting stories on Anne’s death. One account indicated she passed away before getting to Omaha, Nebraska. Another account said 6-year-old Anne became ill and passed away on the trail near the North Platte River in Nebraska and buried along the Mormon Trail.
According to the diary of Charles K. Hansen: “Peter C. Johanssen whom my wife and I was assisting on the journey, had a little girl very sick here, my wife was attending her; an shortly before we reached Omaha she breathed her last, and was buried there I was one of four to pack the corps over one mile to the graveyard, as the man was to stingy to hire a coatch to haul her there.”
According to the family history:
“The trip across the plains left its mark on their hearts, since they buried their six year old daughter Anne Ballmaries, at North Platte, Nebraska.”
