Alice Hoopes is the oldest of nine siblings born to Hyrum Hoopes of Pennsylvania and Eliza Jane Redfield of Connecticut.
After joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hyrum and Eliza Jane joined an “unknown company” to journey west to the Great Salt Lake Valley. (A family history indicated the company might have been the “Aaron Johnson Company.”)
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature birth, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. On the journey west, there was a wagon accident, causing Eliza to give premature birth to Alice. The baby didn’t survive and was buried along the Mormon Trail.
