Alfred Leonard Hansson is the third of three children born to Handers Hansson and Anna Sarah Danielsdotter, both of Sweden.

The family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January 1862. With a desire to join other Saints in Zion, they boarded the ship “Humboldt” bound for America.

From the history of his Alfred’s mother Anna Sarah: “On the 31 May 1866, we started for America, happy with the truth we had found, but sad to leave our beloved homeland. We crossed the ocean on a sailing vessel which took fifty two days on the water. During that time our second son took very ill and died. It was very hard to see his little body drop from a plank into the water to be buried at sea and especially to know that the large animals might destroy his tiny body."

After arriving in America, the family traveled West with other Saints from Sweden and joined the Peter Nebeker Company in Nebraska. On August 7, 1866, the company began their journey to the great Salt Lake Valley.

While in Wyoming, Anna recorded: “Anders, my husband, waded the Platt River helping the wagons across. He caught a cold then and later took sick with Rocky Mountain Fever. He was buried on the plains of Wyoming wrapped in a blanket with a flour sieve and cloth to keep dirt off his face as they buried him.”

Anders is buried near the Big Sandy, just before Fort Bridger, Wyoming.
