Alfred Hunt is the fourth of 12 children born to Amos Hunt and Nancy Garrett Welborn, both from Kentucky. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the family desired to journey west to the great Salt Lake Valley. In 1852, they joined the Benjamin Gardner Company.

Disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Five-year-old Alfred fell victim to cholera (a bacterial disease caused by contaminated water) and passed away. He is buried east of the Wood River in Nebraska.

From Benjamin Gardner's journal: “On the 11th Alfred Hunt 5 years, 4 m, 11 days, died.”
